From The Voices of Children
Short Film - University of Alberta, From The Voices of Children Research Team
About the Project
This film was commissioned by the From the Voices of Children Research Team based out of the University of Alberta and has been a multi-year collaboration to conceptualize, develop and create.
This film was envisioned to communicate the research of this team, which centred on understanding children’s views on singing without the influence of adult perspectives, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic in which many singing activities were halted or altered.
In order to achieve the goals for this documentary, research participants spent a day together in a workshop immersed in singing and song. This setting also provided an opportunity for children to respond freely to research questions through one-on-one interviews with one another. The opinions therefore expressed in this documentary come from the children themselves and provide a genuinely candid and authentic perspective as to the meaning of singing in the lives of children.
Capturing a room full of singing voices, accompanied by piano, was a layered challenge that required complex technological considerations. Many hours of pre-production, location scouting and creative, collaborative discussions helped to create a format that would allow for the children’s genuine voices to come through.
The whole team on this project is humbled to have received a standing ovation at the film’s premier on March 15, 2025 at the Univeristy of Alberta Augustana Campus. The film was accompanied by an event celebrating the release of this film along with children choirs, and a Q&A from the kid involved in the film. From The Voiced of Children was also screened at the Alberta Children’s Choir Concert in spring 2025 at Edmonton’s Windspear centre along with the research team’s presentation.
Holly Mazur Productions helped to create the distribution media kit and plan for this film, including festival submissions, the film’s website (below), trailer, posters, and related media.
